Adverse Impact Tool

Are you looking for an easy way to begin looking at your selection decisions for adverse impact?

I have a new online tool that may help you get started!

I’ve just finished coding and testing an Adverse Impact Tool that calculates some basic statistics of selection decisions. Here’s the details on what the tool can do:

  • Four different kinds of selection decisions:
    • hiring;
    • promotion;
    • termination;
    • reduction in force.
  • Up to four different pools can be studied simultaneously;
  • Three different statistical analyses:
    • Adverse Impact Ratio (a.k.a., 80% Rule, Four-Fifths Rule);
    • Chi Square;
    • Proportions (a.k.a., Standard Deviations Test)
  • Test descriptions are provided;
  • Guidelines for interpretation are provided;
  • Can be used for any “majority” and “minority” groups (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, age, disability status, sexual orientation, etc.).

The tool is intended as a handy reference. Bookmark the page, and next time you want to run a quick calculation, you won’t have to dig through your files to find that Excel spreadsheet or dig through your desk to find that calculator – you can do it online!

One quick word about confidentiality… The tool does not retain your data indefinitely, and neither I nor Thomas Econometrics will have access to your data, be able to use your data for any purposes, identify you or your organization via your data, etc. BUT – because this is an online tool, when you use it you’re putting numbers out there on the interwebs where there’s lots of evil geniuses lurking… so be smart about how and where you use the tool.

Please keep in mind that the tool is a reference, and it doesn’t constitute expert advice (there’s a lengthy disclaimer about the tool’s usage – be sure to read through it before you calculate anything).  The tool is not a substitute for advice from qualified consultants or legal counsel regarding your selection decisions and the potential for adverse impact.
